LIGHTS x ILAO
BANAAG LEARNING SESSIONS:
DATA PRIVACY FUNDAMENTALS
Course Description
This two-day training program on data privacy is being offered by the LIGHTS Institute (LIGHTS), in partnership with the Ateneo de Naga University – Ignatian Legal Apostolate Office (ILAO). It draws from the Filipino word banaag—a glimmer or first light that brings clarity. The training serves as an entry point into the field of data privacy, illuminating its fundamental principles and translating legal requirements into practical understanding.
Anchored by the Data Privacy Act of 2012, the training provides participants with a foundational knowledge of data privacy, particularly in the Philippine context, while touching on key topics featured in relevant circulars, advisories, decisions, and advisory opinions of the National Privacy Commission. It offers participants, especially aspiring data protection officers and privacy practitioners, with a clear blueprint needed to begin building effective privacy programs and strengthening organizational compliance.
The program serves as a springboard towards LIGHTS’s more advanced courses on data privacy, particularly DATA PRIVACY INTENSIVE (coming soon).

Prospective participants shall accomplish the registration form. In so doing, they commit to: (a) make themselves available on the training dates; and (b) pay the corresponding training fee two (2) weeks before the first training date.
-
ILAO shall send to prospective participants a confirmation email after they accomplish and submit the registration form. The email will also contain the payment details and instructions.
-
After payment is made by a prospective participant, he shall send via email to ILAO proof of such payment (e.g., screenshot, scanned copy of deposit slip, etc.). ILAO shall send another confirmation email acknowledging receipt of the payment. Where the prospective participant requires a service invoice, this shall be included in the second confirmation email.
-
The deadline for the payment of the training fee is a week or seven (7) days prior to the scheduled training dates.
-
Only those who have paid the full amount will be considered confirmed participants.
-
Once there are thirty (30) confirmed participants, the training itself will be confirmed, and the training dates will be considered final. ILAO shall inform the participants via email that the training will proceed.
-
ILAO will contact the confirmed participants via email to provide additional details and instructions regarding the training (e.g., program, rules, Zoom meeting link, Zoom background).
Refunds
-
The general rule is that confirmed participants will not be allowed to withdraw and secure a refund once a training program has been confirmed. This is necessary to discourage last-minute withdrawals. However, confirmed participants can give their slot to another individual as a replacement.
-
A full refund shall only be allowed if LIGHTSxILAO informs the prospective participant that the training will NOT proceed, and the prospective participant cannot or does not want to attend the next available training dates.
-
A scheduled training program shall not proceed when:
-
the minimum number of participants required for the training is not met
-
two or more resource persons become unavailable due to an emergency and LIGHTSxILAO are unable to find suitable replacements
-
other fortuitous events that make it impossible to conduct the training
-
-
A partial refund (80% of the training fee) may be allowed if a prospective participant is no longer able to attend the training due to an emergency or other fortuitous events. ILIGHTSxILAO reserve the right to request for proof of the emergency.
